QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS

Q1: How to obtain a large text box and not just the title text box. Barbara

Answer to Q1: I found out that when you add text you have to page down below the title section into the paragraph section and click to obtain a larger box for text  (for example to copy and paste your paper into). Barbara

Q2: how can i add my summary to my web page but only showing the title and not that is an attached file or a file from word. Alexis Watson

Q2 Answer. If I am understanding your question correctly, on that section of title fonts, if you page down to bottom of that, you will see the word paragraph. If you click that word it will put the space for paragraphs on your page. Barbara

Q3: How can you link a “Try Me” button with the critical thinking journal that it goes to ( for example Henry Ford journal was the first one we did and i linked it to the journal page but when i linked the Martin Luther King journal it went to the start of Henry Ford journal.) Daniel

Q3 Answer. Did you make it a sub-page? I made sub-pages as links to each page and it made it easier to get to easy separate page correctly. Barbara

Thank you Barbara, That was the same question I had. - Torrance

Q4: I was trying to figure out how to post my pictures on the page ?. --Angela Boyd-Hilbert

Q4. You can upload your pictures from your phone using an USB cord. Deshon Jones

    Thank you- Deshon Jones

Q4: Or you can upload your pictures from your facebook and any other social medias as well-Anh Tran.

Q5. I was having trouble editing and using the background design. Dewayne

Q5 answer. Dewayne, please refer to Joe’s tip above. Prof. D.

That is very helpful and I also used wix support. In addition to a youtube page on how to build a website with wix.com

Q6.How do i change back my works cited from hanging indent back to regular. Dacia

Dacia, if you are posting your papers as MS Word documents, the w.c. should be in hanging indents; however, if you are copying the text into web pages, it will probably default to a flush left margin, in which case, just make an extra blank line in between each entry to keep them separate. Prof. D.

Thanks for answering that Prof. D! My works cited for my journals wouldn’t remain in their original format, with the hanging indent, and I wasn’t sure how to fix them. -Kaytlin

Q7. How do I post my own pictures onto my page? Qiante

Q7 Answer: When you’re in editing mode, on the top left side, there is a plus sign (Add.) Click it and hit image. Then click, “My Image Uploads.” After you click that, there is an orange button that says, “Upload Images.” - Savanna

Q8. What do I do to extend or make my page longer? Christina

At the bottom of your web-page is the footer section click on the section directly above that and you should have a dotted line that will allow you to either drag it down to extend the page or drag it up to allow the page to be shorter in length.  Andrew L.

Q9. How do I make hyperlinks to other websites on my web page? Emily F

When you click on edit text you should have a box that appears that is call the text settings box. You can find the option to turn words into hyperlinks between font size and the paragraph area. To the right there should be a chain button that allows you to link either other pages on your site or a different web page all together.  Andrew L.

You can also use regular text, and not just the web address as a link in the same area as the above information. For example; I linked the Thomas Nelson home page using the text,  Thomas Nelson Community College, instead of the actual web address. -- Dakota

Q10. How can I turn a pic or pics into my background? Erika B.

When you editing your page, you able to see the left side of the corner.  There is a list of tools, click the first one, then you will able to change your background to whatever you want. ---Ying Chen (Alice)

Q11. What is the best way to insert documents into my web page? --Dakota

Q11 Answer: Hi, Dakota. Have you added a blog? I found that it’s easier to copy and paste my documents as a blog post. It’s not as clunky as inserting Word Documents. You can go to the sidebar and add “blog.” It should be third from the bottom of the list of options. There’s also a free app in the “app market” on the sidebar, where you can embed PDF files. -Kaytlin

Q12. When you’re editing your profile for your web page, and you’re selecting your background picture. How do you zoom in or zoom out, once you select a background ? -- TJ M.

Q.13. Somehow I was able to copy and paste my writings, however I have no idea how I actually did it. Therefore, how do I do this? I usually just start clicking on random things and find out how to do it. I can’t seem to remember this time lol. Jennifer White

Answer: Nevermind, I had a blonde moment. I just had to cut and paste. Wow! ;-)

Q14. I know we’re putting critical thinking on our webfolios, but what other assignments are we adding? Christina Villanueva Hi, Christina. I added that information to your class page. Prof D.

Q15. With a mac the format of my Documents are different and don’t allow me to upload them easily. Instead I always have to copy and paste into my WIX site. Is there anyway for me to do it in an easier way? Doing it the other way is easy to, but i have to go through and find out where each paragraph starts and another begins. Many thanks! -Ben

Q15 Answer: I have a Mac as well, and when I’m typing a paper using Pages, I click on File, Export To, and then whichever format I want to change it to. I have a Macbook pro, so I’m not sure if that has anything to do with it. I’ve been making mine blog posts, so I have to copy and paste anyway. Hope that helps! -Kaytlin

Q16.Is it ok to post our work in blog format? I like the blog format but it doesn’t have the proper spacing and indentations. Is there a way to do that in blog format? -Mary Spitzer Katy, in answer to the first question, sure. Since you are posting to html documents rather than a word processing file, the academic formatting conventions for hard copy papers can’t always be followed. But do keep the citation information and such in the documents, nonetheless, even if they are not in academic formats. You also may want to refer to Kaytlin’s answer to question #11 above. Prof D.

Q17. Is it ok if I add music into my webpage? Anh Tran Anh, certainly. Check out Andrew Lenwell’s home page and Alice Chen’s. They can probably advise you about how to do it since they both have music on theirs. Prof. D. Thank you so much Prof.D.

Q. 18 How do I add my details to my web page? Kizzy Mobley Hi, Kizzy, If by “details” you mean text, the easiest way is to copy and paste your text over the sample text on the templates. What other “details” are you trying to add? If you’re more specific, I’ll bet someone else has already done what you’re trying to do and can answer your question. Prof. D.

Q: 19. Hi, folks! Can someone look at Daniel Morehouse’s Q #3 above and go to his webfolio to see if you have encountered and overcome this problem?  Daniel, as a last resort, you could try to load your documents in n another way. Prof. D.

Q: 20 How can I make jump link tabs? Aaliyah Thomas

Answer Q: 20 In the menu bar? Click on the menu bar and then click “Manage Menu.” Click “Add Page” at the bottom of the column that pops up, and then you can add a link that way. Hope this helps! -Kaytlin

Q: 21 How can I make my webpage overall more interesting being i am changing my major to veterinary asst and what story would I add.

Q:21 Personally, I thinks pictures and colors may get people's attention. For instance, in my page I added a lot of pictures in my critical thinking journal assignments. Music is another option as well. Hope my suggestion helpful for you-Anh Tran.

TIPS

TIP 1: I just thought it’d be cool to mention that you guys can also edit the mobile version of your websites. I know a lot of people access the Internet on their phones and other mobile devices, so it’d be nice to make sure they look nice on both views of the site. At the top right of the editor page, there’s a button that looks like a phone, and it says “Switch Editor Views” when the cursor hovers over it. Click on it and you can then switch from editing the desktop view of your website to the mobile view. If you really want to do some cool things with your website, they also have an “App Market” on the sidebar. Under “Free Apps,” there’s one to embed PDF files. Just thought it’d be helpful to know! -Kaytlin

TIP 2: Not a question! Hey this is Joe, just wanted to share a little bit about creating and manipulating the layouts a little. So when you use a pre-existing layout (which is what I did), you can create all of your pages and then go back in page by page and manipulate the layout a little bit by adding a new background image, or changing the contrast and color scheme a little bit in the edited page.

Thanks Joe, I was wondering about that! It helped a lot! -Trey

Good tip, Joe. Thanks for sharing it! (Prof. D.)

TIP 3: Hey here is some cool tips to show you how to get your site up and running in under 30 minutes.

TIP 4: When you editing your own albums, please keep in mind that if you want people to find your photos on searching engine. If not, then remember to make your albums “private” 2) If you want to insert music, click the second button of left side tool list “Add”, to insert a music. And if you want to music to play during all of your pages, then please the little music box at your head foot in just one of your page    -- Ying Chen (Alice)

TIP 5: Charlotte would like to share that our Google Drive accounts through our school emails have unlimited storage. If you link your Wix account with your Drive account, you can easily share pictures and documents.

CORRESPONDENCE AND KUDOS

  • Anya Bolshakova, beautiful photo! I like the flowing waves background and I LOVE bull mastuff--one of my favorite dog breeds. They are very handsome and almost always are really funny as well. Prof. D.

  • Ben Cardenas, good start. I suggest that you may want to label your documents more descriptively rather than by abbreviation given that visitors to your site may not know anything about what the class projects are. Prof. D.

  • Anthony Carter, nice cityscape. Do you plan to live in Chicago one day? You can see the Sears Tower (I refuse to call it the Willis Building) from Wrigley Field. Go Cubs!! On your welcome page, please remember that we are creating these webfolios for our English class, so please use academic English rather that casual texting or FaceBook conventions such as “i” instead of “I” etc. Prof D.

  • Alice Chen, I like your music; it fits very well with the motif of serenity you have built in with your images. Prof D.

  • Kaytlin Evans, I think it’s so great that you are interested in brain research. In addition to the two titles I recommended to you on Wednesday, I want to share a couple more resources with you. One is a link to Dr. Janet Zadina, my favorite neuroscientist. (When did you think you would ever read a sentence like THAT? Ha ha.) Janet taught college English for about 20 years and got so interested in how the brain works and learns that she went to Tulane University and got a PhD. in neuroscience. I use her stuff all the time in my teaching. I even brought her here to TNCC to do some workshops about six years ago when I was providing professional development and training activities for TNCC faculty. Here is her site: http://www.brainresearch.us/. The other resource I want to give you is a copy of Smilkstein’s book We’re Born to Learn . . . which was the primary source of information for our brain development essay. I have it in the classroom. Please remind me about it on Monday. It’s autographed by Dr. Smilkstein as such: “To my best friend forever, Kaytlin.” Or at least it will be by Monday ;-) Prof. D.

    • Dr. Smilkstein came to campus over the weekend and left the autographed copy of her book at the computer station where you sit. How did she know where you sit?!

  • Emily Freeman, it looks like you maybe typed in your URL rather than using copy and paste, perhaps? I’m thinking so because it is very easy to miskey something when we try to type a URL, and I’m not getting to your site page when I take the link. Do you want to try to copy and past instead of typing and see if we can get a new link to your welcome page? Prof D.

  • Barbara Hensley, that’s not a picture of Crabtree Falls is it? If so it’s a lot fuller thatn I’ve ever seen it. Wow! Nice images. Prof. D. I made my images clickable now, to their websites of where these pics are or about them specifically.

  • Deshon Jones, first--Go Falcons!! Second, as you are loading information to your webfolio don’t forget to update the class page link. :-) Prof. D.

  • Andrew Lenwell, I like the piano music. Your artwork is funny! Prof. D.

  • Dakota Miller, that’s a great photo. It would be really funny if you labeled the two primary subjects by name. Like “Steer”  “Dakota”  Just a thought. ;-) Prof D.

  • Kizzy Mobley, I like your Yorkie. Well, honestly, I pretty much like all dogs. Prof D.

  • Daniel Morehouse, I see that you’ve posted the journal texts but not your documents and that the try me buttons all link to the Ford journal, so I am assuming you haven't gotten an answer to your question. I’ve reposted it in Q #19 above, asking for folks to see if they can help you figure it out. Hang in there, Daniel. You have a good start! Prof D.

  • Dewayne Pierce, try copying and pasting your URL into this document. When we click the link, it goes to an error page, which usually means the user has typed rather than copied in his URL, and it is very hard NOT to type a URL without a typo in it. Prof D.

  • Trey Reichle, it looks like those photos are up on the Appalachian Trail. Good choice! Did you shoot them yourself or find them online? Prof. D. Yes, some of the pictures were taken on the Appalachian Trail during a camping trip I went on with some friends back in February. Others are from all over the place like the Potomac River and Marine City Michigan.

  • Charlotte Souser, good tip (re #5). Can you share how to do that. Please? Prof. D.

  • Katy Spitzer, I love your dogs and your photos. They would look much better with burgundy and gold jerseys and lettering rather than black and gold, but to each her own, I suppose. ;-) Congrats on finishing all those distance runs. I’m usually winded by the time I finish the mile walk around my neighborhood with my pups. :-) Prof. D.

  • Aaliyah Thomas, is your dog still a puppy? The only picture on your photo page shows the little white puppy. Do you have any more recent photos of himie to post? I would like to see what that mix of breeds looks like as a full grown dog. :-) Prof. D. (the dog lover)

  • Christina Villanueva, nice photo page! You should think about linking to your insurance company’s web page and the “sno” place--if they have a web site--from your “about me” text.. Is that your bulldog turned sideways in the middle of your page?

  • Jennifer White, nice start. Lots of folks are adding photos to their critical thinking journals. Are you going to do that? Prof D.

  • Kizzy Mobley thank you all for the comments about my yorkie poo and i looking to get another one so she can have a playmate her sister died last year got hit by a car i am still sad by it.

Also a reminder, to everyone, to take this kind of stuff off the template: © 2023 By Henry Cooper. Proudly created with Wix.com. It’s not yet 2023, you are not Henry Cooper (or whomever your own page says) and you haven’t copyrighted your Wix page--right? Prof. D.

  • Kudos Prof. D. and all of the English 111 students. I have had a few headaches, setbacks, and NoNo’s over the past couple of days dealing with Wix.com. Special thanks to Barbara Hensley for your help and assistance today. I have had a chance to look at everyone's wix pages with working links. Good job to everyone. A few pages stand out to me as I viewed them for help and ideas to improve my own. Shout out to Kaytlin, Ben, Alice, Joe, Michael, Barbara, Savanna, Dakota, Trey, Mary, Aaliyah, Christina, Jennee and Alexis W. for making great webfolios.  All of your pages are motivation and inspiration. I am looking forward to seeing your final products. - Torrance

  • Kaytlin Evans, Your page is sooo cute. I love it :) - Christina Villanueva
