Reading Is a Great Skill to Learn

Reading is a very useful skill one should learn. It is important for a variety reasons. Reading can help people understand information needed for daily life. It also help people discover new things, build up their mind, develop their imagination and for entertainment as well. Reading to children can help the relationship between parents and children getting stronger. Moreover, today, many well-paying jobs require reading as a part of job performance. In the paragraphs below, I will explore why reading skills are important and how I improved my reading skills from my English class.

When I was a child, my parents didn't have time read to me. They had to work hard every day to feed our family. I always read and studied by myself. In the future, if I have children, I will as often as possible read to my children. I will read to my children about what I thinks helpful for them. When I was in high school, I often skim texts when I read. I had never read careful except when I read something I likes. Fortunately, when I went to Literacy for Life to learn English, I met my tutor, and we have worked together to help improve my English. After a period of time, I become more careful when I read. My tutor taught me how to read and how to understand the main idea of what I read. We read a book named The Prince. It is a story about a pilot lost to a strange planet, who met many different people lived far away from the earth. The book was so exciting and I was also learn a lot of vocabulary from it. Recently, I have been listening to the naturalization test on an audio cd. I think listening also is another good way to study. Every time I drive to work or wherever I travel, I turn on the radio or the naturalization test CD. It is very helpful to study language by listening.

Yes, I do believe that reading plays a very important role in a person’s success. It doesn't matter what grade or college you are attending, reading skill is always important to your success. A student with good reading skill will understand exactly and faster in their study. Reading skill is not just important to the student, it is also important to people who are employed. There is a lot of important information that we have to read every day at work. Good reading skill will help people organize better their work schedule. I am a first generation college student. My parents didn't go to college. After my parents graduated from high school, they had to work to help their family. Most of the people at my parents age didn't have the opportunity to go to college because my country was involved in a war at that time. As a person who speak English as a second language, I have studied English for three years. My English has improved a lot compared to the first year I living in U.S, but I understand that I have to work harder in order to improve my reading, writing, and speaking skills. Hopefully, my English will get better in the near future.

I attended Thomas Nelson Community College. Currently, I am taking English 111 for Spring 2016. After four months attending the English class, I realize that my English has improved a lot, especially my reading skill. When I reading, I can understand exactly what I read. I also can paraphrase and summarize information from the source. In order to perform my assignments, I am taking note when I listen to the lectures. SQ4R is a great study and reading strategy, which is helpful for my study. I learn from my English professor about how to read well by discovering the vocabulary before reading. My English assignments, such as critical thinking journals, also helps me improve my reading and writing as well.

Reading is a great skill everyone can learn. It is the foundation of education. The best way to discover new things is reading. It is very important to college students to have reading skill because most of knowledge came from books. Reading is also required as a part of our life. All in all, it doesn’t matter who you are, the more you read, the more you learn, and the more you succeed.
