Communication: The Most Important Skill

Communication skills are the ability to communicate, which consists of many different skills. People communicate everywhere, at work, at school, at home, in public. Communication skills are very important in the workplace and education as well. Especially to college students, communication skills are required as a part of their study and their future career.

There is an article that describes how young people communicate in the workplace. It was written by Susan Adams in Forbes magazine, and is tilled “Why Grammar Counts at Work.” Nowadays, young people tend to overuse slang at the workplace. The good news is 45% out of 430 companies in a survey considered improving their employee’s grammar and other skills. It said the companies were going to provide grammar training, which will be expensive. Adams believes that grammar plays a very important role in people’s conversation and writing. Good grammar demonstrated people’s intelligence and professional respect for others. Moreover, grammar skill has become important in today’s marketplace. (Adams) Kyle Weins, CEO of IFixit Company, said that he wouldn’t hire people who have bad grammar. The development of technology has rapidly changed business management. Most of the communications between seller and buyer are done online, which means there is a lot of written communications. That is why grammar has become more and more important in today’s society. Weins also mentioned “language is constantly changing, but that doesn’t make grammar unimportant,” and “in blog posts, on Facebook statuses, in e-mails, and company websites, your words are all you have” (Weins).

In order to be successful in the future career, determine what field we want to work in will give us an ideas about what skills we need to improve. Four months ago, I registered with Thomas Nelson Community College. My major is Information Technology, which means I will become a part of an IT department in a company. The wide application of technology in business management makes IT departments very important to other departments. It means that being an IT, I have to communicate with many different people in many different ways, such as emailing, texting, and talking. In order to communicate at the workplace, I have to have good grammar skills. Good grammar also showed how professional am I to my employment, which is very important for my future career (O.O.H). I believed that grammar is one of the most important skills to study in order to entry into a professional career.

I currently work at Lumber Liquidators. My position is “pit operator.” I am responsible for the information on the hardwood floors before they go to warehouse storage. After I receive the work schedule, I carefully read it. I put information from the wood into the computer and then send it to the printers. I also operate machines, such as strap-machine, forklift, and elevator. When a problem happens with those machines, I call maintenance, describe the issue, and learn how to fix the machines if it happens again. Similar to my work, in my English class, I often communicate with my classmates in order to understand the lecture and to do the assignment. Communication in class, such as listening to people’s ideas, sharing my opinion, and writing the paper are very helpful to improve my English. In the field of information technology, communication skill is very important. It helps me understand the issue by reading documents and listening to people. After understanding exactly what the issue is, I can repair it, and describe or report to people if needed. What I have communicated in my English class is exactly what I need for my future career in the field of information technology.

Communication skills are very important to people who want to be successful. Communication skills not only are needed in daily activities but also required in the marketplace. Focusing on learning and practicing communication skills is the best way to improve; people, who have good communication skills would be no doubt that they will be successful.
