Comma Group Project

I Commas can be used to ADD information to a sentence.

1/P-1b. A comma can be used to add information at the beginning of a sentence.

·         Taylor, is a very hard worker.

·         Today, I will go to class at 6:30

·         Later, I will go to the store.

2/P-1d. A nonrestrictive element is one that is not necessary for the meaning of the sentence and is separated by a comma.

·       This past summer I went to Hawaii, The big island called Oahu.

A restrictive element is one that is needed to be able to understand the meaning of the sentence and is not separated with a comma.

·       Hawaii has a capital called Honolulu.   

3/P-1e. A comma can be used to add information, which is support for the meaning of a sentence but may affect the flow of the sentence.

·         The Alphabet, although is great, it is for my daughter.

 Transitions are words that can be used to join sentences or parts of sentence that are separated by a comma. To connect two independent sentences, we use a period or semicolon.

·         There is a lot of softball players in the US; In fact, many softball players are on traveling teams.

·         There are many people who try out for softball games. In fact, most softball players start as early as 12 years old; The United States loves softball players.

II. Commas are used to separate elements within a sentence.

5/P-1c. A comma can be used to separate elements in a series.

·         I used to have many different stuffed animals such as bears, kitties, and bunnies.

·         I carry my daughter when I go across the street, when I go shopping, and even when I walk to the park.

·     I have played many different kinds of sports such as softball, cheering on high school team, playing basketball, etc.  

·    Crissy ate her chicken so that she could play outside, go swimming, and have a snack.

·    When I eat pizza I pick off the red peppers, onion, and mushrooms.

6/P-1g. A comma can be used to state a quote from a speaker or a source.

·         “I don’t know who invented High heels but all women owe him a lot.”-Marilyn Monroe

7/P-1h. A comma can be used to direct address, Interjections, yes,no questions and tag questions.

·         Yes, in my hometown, there are many motorcycles have used for long time ago.

·         No, you can’t use cellphones while driving.

·         Oh, sure, you can use my pen if you need it.

·         The food was good, wasn’t it?

III. Commas can be used to JOIN clauses (along with conjunctions) to form compound sentences.

8/P-1a. A comma can be used to join independent clauses to sentence.

·         I don’t want to go to visit the dentist, but I have to come over twice a year.

·         Alcohol isn’t good for your health, and we all know that.

·         I have to consider between attending TNCC, or joining the army.

IV. MECHANICAL uses for commas??

9/P-1i. A comma can be used to separate addresses with locations  and street names.

    ·       Thomas Nelson’s mailing address can be found at 99 Thomas Nelson Dr, Hampton, VA 23666.

    ·       On January 18th,2014 Taylor’s baby was born, and now she is two.

    ·       In the state of Ohio, Jocelyn Marie was born on September 24, 2000.

    ·       When you want to see a movie at 8:00 pm, you will have to go to 1430 High St, Williamsburg, VA 23185.

    ·       I can’t wait to go to the cherry blossom festival on April 16, 2016.

V. Common comma errors--where commas are NOT needed

10/P-1j. There are some unnecessary comma in sentence need to eliminate.

·         What the purpose of the comma, was used in that sentence.

·         I wondered, why I have to visit the doctor every year.

·         I was driving and, listening to the radio.

·         We have a lot of fun in summer such as, go fishing, go to the beach, or travel to the countryside.

·          I enjoy going, to the movies on the weekends.
